Interested in Joining NMSA?

Below is information to help parents understand how and when NMSA teams are formed and how interested players can join the club.

GENERAL

All of our age group teams and training pools are limited by a cap on numbers therefore all players must be invited to join a group. We do not have open enrollment for any of our programs.

Depending on openings within a certain team, a player may be able to join a team at any point during the year, however at specific times of the year we will run Tryouts and ID events. Generally speaking we create teams during the period from mid April to the beginning of June.

To begin the process of joining the club, the first step is for parents to fill out our online Interest form that can be at the top of this page.  This form asks for basic contact and background information regarding your player. This online form is also used as a pre-registration form for upcoming tryouts/ID events. The information from this form is shared with age group coaches and as a result an NMSA coach who has availability on his team may reach out and invite you to an individual team tryout. Alternatively, you might receive information from the club regarding an upcoming ID event or club wide tryout.

ID Events (MlS Next and Girls Academy)

The club uses ID events to provide opportunities for players interested in joining our elite programs to be seen by our coaching staff. Our Elite teams compete in MLS Next and Girls Academy National platforms. Participation in these platforms involves significant travel, time commitment and expense. These teams are coached by our most experienced and knowledgeable coaches and span the U13 to U19 Age groups. Generally, ID Events take place towards the end of the spring season in preparation for teams forming in May/June. Players who attend an ID Event may not receive any feedback from the coaches in attendance. Coaches may contact players after an ID event to offer a spot to a player or to request that players participate in a team for a practice session for further evaluation.

Team Tryouts

During the month of May, teams across all ages in the club may run an individual team tryout., This will not be advertised by the club as a whole. Individual team coaches will invite interested players to join a practice on a specific day with the intent of evaluating interested players. After participating in a practice with an individual team, you should expect some level of communication from the coach regarding next steps. Teams that are not looking to add players for the following season may not offer any team tryouts or may offer very selective opportunities. Local league rules allow players from any team/club to participate in team tryouts without receiving permission from their current coach after May 1st.

Club Tryouts

Club wide tryouts are held after the completion of the NMYSA state Cup tournament., The dates of these tryouts are dictated by the local league and each member club rotates the order in which they are allowed to hold a club tryout. The U9 – U14 tryouts take place during the last week in May and the U15-U19 tryouts take place during the first week in June. NMSA uses these tryouts to fill any remaining spots on teams prior to the post season summer session. Since many teams may have filled all of their available roster spots by this time, not every team will participate in the club wide tryout. Information regarding the dates and location for these tryouts are published in our website in advance of the tryout.
